A first luxury watch is a big step. It's money you'll notice, and a watch you'll probably wear for decades. So the best choice isn't the flashiest. It's the one that suits your life, from a brand with a strong service network, in a design you won't tire of.

These are the watches we'd shortlist between £1,300 and £4,500. They're all sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown, and they update when we re-check them.

How we chose

Each watch is from an established luxury brand, sold new by a UK authorised retailer with the full manufacturer's guarantee, and under £4,500. We picked steel watches that work every day, and we preferred automatics with long power reserves and sapphire crystals. Where we quote a technical detail, it's from the brand's page or Goldsmiths' listing, and we say which.

Longines' dive watch is the smartest way into Swiss luxury. Longines' page lists an automatic movement with a silicon balance spring and up to 72 hours of power reserve, a sapphire crystal, a one-way rotating bezel and 30 bar (300 metres) of water resistance. The 39mm size wears well on most wrists.

The Aquis is Oris' modern dive watch. Oris lists the 733-1 automatic movement with a 41-hour power reserve, a domed sapphire crystal, a ceramic bezel insert and 30 bar (300 metres) of water resistance. Oris' own price is £1,990, so Goldsmiths' sale price was a genuine saving when we checked.

Good to know: sale prices end without warning. At 43.5mm, it's also a big watch. The 39mm Oris Divers Date (£2,100) is the smaller alternative and, according to Oris, comes with both a steel bracelet and a rubber strap.

Oris lists the 754-1 automatic movement, 41 hours of power reserve, a domed sapphire crystal and 5 bar (50 metres) of water resistance. It's characterful and easy to wear.

It's a 42mm dive watch, water resistant to 300 metres, with what Goldsmiths describes as a COSC-certified calibre TH31-00 and an 80-hour power reserve, plus TAG Heuer's 5-year guarantee. It's tough enough for holidays and smart enough for work.

For something bolder, the Breitling Avenger Automatic (£3,750) is a 42mm automatic, also water resistant to 300 metres. See our best Breitling watches.

How to choose your first luxury watch

Wear it before you buy it

Visit a showroom and try your shortlist on. A watch that looks right in photos can feel too big, too thick or too heavy on your wrist, and the reverse is just as common.

Think about servicing

Luxury automatic watches need servicing every several years, and a service costs more than on a cheaper watch. Each brand recommends its own interval: check the guarantee booklet. Quartz and solar watches, like the TAG Heuer Formula 1 and Aquaracer Solargraph, need much less.

Buy from an authorised retailer

An authorised retailer sells you a genuine watch with the full manufacturer's guarantee. Every watch in this guide is sold by one. Keep the receipt and guarantee card together.

Don't buy it as an investment

A few watches hold their value, but most are worth less second-hand than new. Buy the one you'll love wearing.

Questions people ask

What is a good first luxury watch?
A versatile steel watch from a respected Swiss brand, in a size you'll wear every day. Longines, Oris and TAG Heuer offer strong options from about £1,300 to £2,500, and the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 and Omega De Ville are the next steps at £3,500 to £4,500.
How much should I spend on my first luxury watch?
Most people spend between £1,500 and £4,000. Below that, brands like Tissot and Hamilton offer better value. Above it, you're into Omega, Rolex and beyond. Choose a budget you're comfortable with, because servicing will also cost more than on a cheaper watch.
What about Tudor, Rolex and Grand Seiko?
They're excellent, but we don't feature them, because Goldsmiths pays us nothing on them and we'd rather recommend watches we can earn from honestly. At the same money, the watches in this guide give you just as much. See our Omega vs Rolex and Rolex alternatives.
Is Longines or TAG Heuer better for a first luxury watch?
Longines for value, TAG Heuer for sporty style. Longines gives you 72-hour automatics like the HydroConquest for under £2,000; TAG Heuer's Aquaracer Professional 300 adds an 80-hour COSC-certified movement for more. See TAG Heuer vs Longines.
Do I need a chronometer?
No, but it's a nice extra. A chronometer has been tested for accuracy. A "Master Chronometer" (like the Omega De Ville here) has also been tested for resistance to magnetism, according to the METAS standard described in Goldsmiths' descriptions. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 has a COSC-certified chronometer movement, according to Goldsmiths.
Should my first luxury watch be quartz or automatic?
Many people choose automatic for a first luxury watch, for the craftsmanship. But quartz and solar luxury watches, like the TAG Heuer Formula 1 and the light-powered Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph here, are superbly made and much easier to live with.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
