There's a big jump in quality between £1,000 and £2,000. This is where you move from very good watches to proper Swiss and German luxury: movements that run for three days, silicon parts that resist magnetism, and guarantees of up to five years. These are the best watches you can buy new in the UK for under £2,000.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown, and they update when we re-check them.

How we chose

We looked at every watch Goldsmiths sells between £1,000 and £2,000 and chose the best of each type: an everyday watch, a diver, a dress watch, a chronograph, a GMT and a solar watch. We judged the movement, materials, water resistance, finishing and guarantee. Specifications come from Goldsmiths' product pages and the brands' own descriptions.

What the extra money buys

If a £640 Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 or Hamilton Khaki Field Auto is already a great watch, why spend more? Here's what changes between £1,000 and £2,000:

  • Longer guarantees. Goldsmiths lists a 5-year guarantee on Longines and TAG Heuer watches, against 2 years on Tissot and Hamilton.
  • Better movements. Longines' newer automatics run for up to 72 hours and use a silicon balance spring, according to Goldsmiths' descriptions.
  • Finer finishing. Polished and brushed surfaces, sharper dial details and better bracelets. You notice it every time you look at the watch.
  • The name. Longines, NOMOS and TAG Heuer have real luxury standing, which matters if the watch is a gift or a milestone.

Best overall: Longines Conquest

The Conquest is the watch we'd recommend to most people with £2,000 to spend. Goldsmiths' description lists a self-winding movement with a monocrystalline silicon balance spring and a power reserve of up to 72 hours, a screw-in crown, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and 100 metres of water resistance. It's 41mm across, sporty without being chunky, and comes with Longines' 5-year guarantee.

Good to know: if 41mm is too big, the Conquest also comes in 38mm, including quartz versions from about £1,300.

Best dive watch: Longines HydroConquest

This is the best value in luxury dive watches. Goldsmiths' description lists the L888 automatic calibre with 72 hours of power reserve, water resistance to 300 metres and a 41mm steel case and bracelet. Goldsmiths says the HydroConquest collection was originally launched in 2007, for divers and water sports professionals. At about £1,300, it costs less than many watches that do far less.

Other great divers at this price: the Oris Aquis Date (300 metres), Seiko's Prospex 1965 Revival, a reinterpretation of Seiko's first diver's watch from 1965, according to Goldsmiths' description, and the Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster, which Goldsmiths lists as water resistant to 1,000 metres with a helium valve.

Best dress watch: NOMOS Club Campus

NOMOS makes its watches in Glashütte, Germany, and the Club Campus is its friendliest. It's hand-wound, so you wind it by the crown each morning, which many people enjoy. At 38mm it suits most wrists, and it's water resistant to 100 metres, which is rare for a dress watch.

Questions people ask

What is the best watch under £2,000?
For most people, the Longines Conquest: a 41mm Swiss automatic with a 72-hour power reserve, a silicon balance spring, 100 metres of water resistance and a 5-year guarantee, according to Goldsmiths. If you want a dive watch, the Longines HydroConquest is even better value.
Is it worth spending £2,000 on a watch?
If you'll wear it every day for years, yes. Compared with a good £600 to £1,000 watch, you get finer finishing, longer guarantees (5 years from Longines and TAG Heuer, against 2 from Tissot and Hamilton, according to Goldsmiths), longer power reserves and a brand with real luxury standing.
What is the best Swiss watch under £2,000?
Longines, for value and finish. Oris, Tissot's automatic chronographs and TAG Heuer's Formula 1 are all excellent too. For Swiss watches under £1,000, see our Swiss watches under £1,000.
Can you get an Omega or a Rolex for under £2,000?
Not new. Omega's men's watches at Goldsmiths start above £4,000, and Rolex isn't sold online. Under £2,000, Longines is the closest you'll get to that level of finish. See our Rolex alternatives.
Longines or TAG Heuer under £2,000?
Longines, for most people. Under £2,000, Longines gives you 72-hour automatics like the Conquest and HydroConquest, while TAG Heuer's watches at this price are mostly quartz or solar, like the Formula 1 Solargraph. See our TAG Heuer vs Longines.
What is the best Longines under £2,000?
The Conquest for everyday wear, or the HydroConquest if you swim. Both are automatic. See our best Longines watches for every collection.
What is a silicon balance spring?
The balance spring is the hairspring that keeps a mechanical watch's time. Making it from silicon rather than metal means it isn't affected by magnetism in the same way, which helps the watch stay accurate. Goldsmiths' description of the Longines Conquest lists a monocrystalline silicon balance spring.
