An 18th birthday watch is often the first "proper" watch someone owns, and one they may keep for life. So we've chosen watches that feel special now but won't look dated at 30 or 40: quality movements, sapphire crystals where possible, and designs that suit a smart occasion as well as everyday wear.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown, and they update when we re-check them.

How we chose

We picked watches from established brands, between about £280 and £1,300, that suit an 18-year-old's style today and will still look right in 20 years. We favoured automatic movements (which feel special for a milestone) and sapphire crystals, and chose sizes from 25mm to 40mm.

It's hard to think of a better 18th birthday watch. The PRX's 1970s design is genuinely popular with young people, and the automatic version feels like a proper milestone gift. Tissot lists an 80-hour power reserve, a sapphire crystal and 100-metre water resistance. If they have a slimmer wrist, the 35mm version is £640.

Making it a gift to remember

Engraving

A date, initials or a short message on the case back turns a watch into a keepsake. Check with the retailer before you buy whether the watch you've chosen can be engraved, and how long it takes.

Keep the box and papers

The box, guarantee card and receipt matter if the watch ever needs repairing under guarantee, and they add to its value if it's ever sold. Put them somewhere safe.

Size

Most 18-year-olds suit 36 to 40mm (men) or 25 to 34mm (women). Bracelets usually need links removing, which the retailer can do.

Questions people ask

How much should you spend on an 18th birthday watch?
Most people spend between £250 and £800. That buys a watch from Tissot, Seiko, Hamilton or Citizen that will last for decades. If it's a once-in-a-lifetime gift from the whole family, a Longines around £1,300 is a lovely step up.
Can you engrave an 18th birthday watch?
Many watches can be engraved on the case back, and it makes a gift very personal. Watches with a see-through case back (like several automatics here) have less room. Ask the retailer what's possible before you buy.
What's better for an 18-year-old, quartz or automatic?
An automatic feels more special as a milestone gift, because it's a mechanical watch that winds itself. Quartz is more practical, more accurate and needs less care. Our guide Automatic, quartz or solar? explains the difference.
What is a good 18th birthday watch for a girl?
The Tissot PRX 25mm for everyday style, or the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time for an automatic. To keep for life, the Longines Conquest 34mm. See our watch gifts for her.
What is a good 18th birthday watch for a boy?
The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 is the one we'd choose: Swiss, automatic, with an 80-hour power reserve. Under £300, a Seiko 5 Sports. See our watch gifts for him.
Is an 18th the right time for a luxury watch?
It can be, if it will be looked after. Many families give a mid-priced Swiss watch at 18 and save a luxury watch for a 21st, a graduation or a first job.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
