Under £500 you buy a good watch. Under £1,000 you can buy a great one. This is the price where automatic movements run for three days on a full wind, sapphire crystals are standard, and brands put real effort into the dial and the finishing.

Here are twelve men's watches under £1,000, each the best at something. They're all sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown, and they update whenever we re-check them.

How we chose

Each watch had to cost under £1,000 at a UK authorised retailer, carry a manufacturer's guarantee and have a sapphire crystal (the brand's own figures, where we could read them). Then we picked one watch per job: everyday, diving, dressing up, travel and so on. If you're spending less, see our best men's watches under £500.

Best overall: Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

If we could only recommend one watch at this price, it would be the automatic PRX. Tissot's page lists the Powermatic 80 movement with an 80-hour power reserve, a sapphire crystal, 100-metre water resistance and a case 10.93mm thick. The integrated bracelet and 1970s shape look like they belong on a much more expensive watch.

Good to know: the bracelet is built into the case shape, so ordinary straps won't fit. And if your wrist is slim, there's a 35mm version for £640.

Best everyday watch: Hamilton Khaki Field Auto

Best everyday watchHamilton Khaki Field Auto H70455533 · 38mm · Automatic · 100 m water resistant £640Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

If you want one watch to wear with everything, this is it. The Khaki Field is a military-style watch built for legibility. Hamilton's page lists the H-10 automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve, a sapphire crystal and 100-metre water resistance. At 38mm across and 11mm thick, it suits almost every wrist, and the leather strap is easy to swap for canvas or a NATO.

Best dive watch: Tissot Seastar 2000 Professional

Tissot Seastar 2000

This is a genuine professional dive watch for well under £1,000. According to Tissot, it's certified to ISO 6425 (the diving-watch standard), water resistant to 60 bar (600 metres), with a helium escape valve for saturation divers, a ceramic rotating bezel and an automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve.

Good to know: Goldsmiths' specification table lists 300 metres. We've used Tissot's own figure. And at 44mm across and 15.29mm thick, it's a big watch, best on larger wrists. For more choice, see our guide to the best dive watches under £1,000.

Best compact dive watch: Certina DS Action Diver 38

Certina DS Action Diver
Certina DS Action Diver C0488071105100 · 38mm · Automatic · 300 m water resistant £790Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

If the Seastar sounds too big, Certina's DS Action Diver puts a Swiss Powermatic 80 automatic (as Goldsmiths' product title says) into a 38mm steel case, water resistant to 300 metres according to Goldsmiths. It suits smaller wrists and works as an everyday watch as well as a diver.

Best dress watch: Seiko Presage Classic "Shiro-iro"

Seiko Presage Classic Shiro-iro
Best dress watchSeiko Presage Classic Shiro-iro SPB463J1 · 40mm · Automatic · 100 m water resistant £940Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

Shiro-iro is Japanese for "white", and the dial is the star here. Seiko's page lists the 6R55 automatic movement with about 72 hours (three days) of power reserve, a dual-curved sapphire crystal and 10 bar (100 metres) of water resistance, which is unusually good for a dress watch.

Good to know: at 13mm thick (Seiko's figure), it sits a little taller than the slimmest dress watches.

Best traditional dress watch: Tissot Le Locle

Tissot Le Locle
Tissot Le Locle T0064071103300 · 39.3mm · Automatic · 30 m water resistant £665Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

The Le Locle is named after Tissot's home town and has a classic Roman-numeral dial. Tissot lists an automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve, a sapphire crystal, a see-through case back and a slim 9.75mm case, so it slips under a shirt cuff.

Good to know: it's only water resistant to 3 bar (30 metres), so keep it away from water.

Best for the outdoors: Seiko Prospex Alpinist

Seiko Prospex Alpinist
Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB155J1 · 38mm · Automatic · 200 m water resistant £670Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

The Alpinist is a cult watch among enthusiasts, originally designed for Japanese mountaineers. This 38mm version has Seiko's 6R35 automatic movement with about 70 hours of power reserve, a curved sapphire crystal and 20 bar (200 metres) of water resistance, according to Seiko. It's rugged and handsome, and the green dial is the classic choice.

The newer 39.5mm Alpinist (£850) adds a rotating compass bezel and the 72-hour 6R55 movement.

Best chronograph: Seiko Prospex Speedtimer

Seiko Prospex Speedtimer
Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC961P1 · 39mm · Solar · 100 m water resistant £670Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch, and this one is solar-powered, so there's no battery to change. It has a sapphire crystal, 100-metre water resistance and a white "panda" dial with black sub-dials, in a 39mm case. It's one of the best-looking chronographs under £1,000.

Watch out for the name: Seiko also sells a £900 Speedtimer Automatic. Seiko's page shows it isn't a chronograph at all. It has a rotating countdown ring instead. For more choice, see our guide to the best chronograph watches under £1,000.

Best open-heart automatic: Hamilton Jazzmaster Open Heart

Hamilton Jazzmaster Open Heart Auto
Hamilton Jazzmaster Open Heart Auto H32675551 · 40mm · Automatic · 50 m water resistant £990Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

An "open heart" dial has a window that shows the balance wheel of the movement ticking away. Hamilton lists the H-10 automatic with an 80-hour power reserve, a sapphire crystal and 5 bar (50 metres) of water resistance, on a brown leather strap. It's a dressy watch with something to look at.

Best dress watch with a twist: Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium

Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium

The Gentleman is Tissot's smart everyday watch, and this version has a silicon balance spring, which helps the movement resist magnetism. Tissot lists 80 hours of power reserve, a sapphire crystal, 100-metre water resistance and an 11.5mm-thick case. The green dial is a smart, slightly unusual choice.

What extra £500 buys you

Compared with our under £500 picks, here's what changes:

  • Power reserve. Most automatics under £500 run for about 40 hours. Almost every automatic here runs for 70 to 80 hours, so the watch survives a weekend off the wrist.
  • Sapphire everywhere. Every watch in this guide has a sapphire crystal, which stays scratch-free far longer than mineral glass.
  • Better dials and finishing. Look at the Seiko Presage or the Hamilton Open Heart in person and you'll see the difference.
  • More specialised tools. A 600-metre ISO diver or a 72-hour field watch with a compass bezel simply aren't available at the lower price.

Questions people ask

Is it worth spending £1,000 on a watch?
If you'll wear it most days for years, yes. Compared with a £300 watch, you typically get a longer power reserve, sapphire rather than mineral glass, better finishing and a movement worth servicing. Above £1,000, you're increasingly paying for the name and finer details rather than for practical improvements.
What is power reserve and why does it matter?
It's how long an automatic watch keeps running once you take it off. Older and cheaper movements manage about 40 hours, so the watch stops over a weekend. Many watches in this guide have 70 to 80 hours, so you can take it off on Friday evening and it will still be running on Monday.
Which is better, Tissot or Hamilton?
Both are Swiss, and at this price both offer automatic movements with an 80-hour power reserve (Tissot's Powermatic 80 and Hamilton's H-10). Choose on design. Tissot leans towards sleek and sporty (PRX, Seastar), Hamilton towards military and American heritage (Khaki Field, Jazzmaster).
Should I buy a Seiko or a Swiss watch for under £1,000?
Both are excellent. Seiko's Prospex and Presage watches around £700 to £950 have Seiko's own 6R movements, sapphire crystals and superb dials. Swiss watches at the same price often have longer power reserves. Pick the one you like looking at more.
Tissot PRX or Seiko 5: which should I buy?
The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 if you can stretch to it: it's Swiss, with an 80-hour power reserve. A Seiko 5 Sports costs less and has about 41 hours. See our best Tissot watches and best Seiko watches.
What is the best field watch under £1,000?
The Hamilton Khaki Field Auto, with an 80-hour H-10 automatic. See our best field watches for every budget.
How often does an automatic watch need servicing?
Each brand recommends its own interval, often somewhere in the range of every five to ten years. Check the guarantee booklet that comes with the watch, and use the brand's authorised service centre or a reputable watchmaker.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
