A watch is a gift he'll wear every day, and a good one will still be going in twenty years. It's also easy to get wrong: too big, too flashy, or not his style. This guide gives you the best watch to buy him at every budget, then the right watch for your husband, boyfriend or dad, and how to get the size right without spoiling the surprise.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown, and they update when we re-check them. Buying for Christmas? Our Christmas watch gifts guide covers him and her.

Before you buy: get his size and style right

You can work out almost everything from the watch he wears now.

  • Size. Most men wear 38mm to 42mm. The size is often printed on the case back, or measure across the case without the crown. If he has slim wrists, stay at 40mm or under. If you can find out his wrist measurement, our watch size calculator turns it into a case size.
  • Bracelet or strap. If he wears a metal bracelet, he'll probably like another. A bracelet usually needs links removing to fit, which a jeweller can do quickly.
  • Style. Dressy and slim, sporty and chunky, or digital? Match what he already likes and you can't go far wrong.
  • Battery, solar or automatic. If he'd never change a battery, choose solar (charges from light) or automatic (winds itself as he moves). Our automatic, quartz or solar guide explains the difference.

The best watch gift for your husband

Think about the occasion first:

  • An anniversary: a dress watch he can wear with a suit, like the Longines Master Collection, engraved with your date. Our wedding watches guide has more.
  • A birthday or Christmas: the Tissot PRX suits almost every man and every style, and it's a Swiss watch for under £500.
  • A milestone (40th, 50th, retirement): an Omega, like the Seamaster Aqua Terra or the Diver 300M. See our retirement watches too.
  • If he already has a nice watch: something different from it. If he wears a dress watch, give a dive watch or a G-Shock; if he wears a sports watch, give something dressy.

The right watch for who he is

For your boyfriend. Keep it fun and wearable: a G-Shock, a Seiko 5 Sports or a Tissot PRX all look great and won't feel like too much. If you've been together a long time, the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto is a gift he'll keep for years.

For your dad. Choose something easy to read and easy to live with. A solar Citizen Eco-Drive never needs a battery, and a clear dial with bold hands is easier to read at a glance. For a retirement or a big birthday such as his 60th or 70th, a Longines or an Omega engraved with the date makes a gift he'll keep: see our retirement watches guide.

For your son. See our guides to the best watches for teenagers and 18th birthday watches.

For the man who travels. A GMT watch shows a second time zone. The Seiko 5 Sports SKX GMT is the best-value one, and our GMT watches guide has more.

What to engrave

An engraving turns a watch into an heirloom. Goldsmiths says its engravers can engrave the case or case back of a watch. Keep it short, because space is small:

  • A date: your wedding, the day you met, or the occasion.
  • Initials: his, or both of yours.
  • A few words: "Always", "Our time", "For every moment", or a phrase only the two of you understand.
  • For dad: "Love always, [names]" with the year.

Have the watch engraved only once you're sure it fits and works: personalised items usually can't be returned. And if the watch has a see-through case back, ask where an engraving can go before you buy.

What to write with the watch

The card, or the engraving, is what makes a watch his. Some ideas:

  • For your husband: "For all our time to come." "Every minute with you." Your wedding date, and "Still, always."
  • For your boyfriend: "For the times we haven't had yet." "Our time starts now." The date you met.
  • For your dad: "Thank you for all the time you gave us." "Love always", with your names and the year.
  • For a milestone: "Happy 40th. Here's to the next 40." "Congratulations, and enjoy the time." For a retirement: "Your time is your own now."

Engravings have to be short, so save the longer message for the card. See what to engrave above.

When to buy

Goldsmiths' delivery page (read in October 2026) says in-stock items ordered by 9pm, any day of the week, arrive the next day, though that isn't guaranteed at its busiest times, such as Christmas. Express delivery is free on orders over £200. Its extended Christmas returns cover items bought between 1 October 2026 and 3 January 2027, if unused and in their original packaging, with proof of purchase. Check Goldsmiths' page before you order, especially near a birthday or Christmas.

Questions people ask

Is a watch a good gift for him?
Yes. It's personal, he'll wear it every day, and a good one lasts for decades. The key is getting his style and size right: look at the watch he wears now (see below).
How much should I spend on a watch for my husband or boyfriend?
Whatever you're comfortable with: there are excellent watches at every budget. Around £100 to £300 buys a great everyday watch like the Citizen Eco-Drive Sport. £300 to £1,000 buys a Swiss watch like the Tissot PRX. For a big anniversary or milestone, luxury starts at about £1,500.
What size watch should I buy him?
Most men wear a watch between 38mm and 42mm across. The easiest way to get it right is to check the watch he already wears: the size is often on the case back, or measure across the face without the crown. Our watch size calculator suggests sizes from a wrist measurement, and explains lug-to-lug length too.
What should I engrave on a watch for him?
Keep it short: a date, your initials and his, or a few words that mean something to you both. Goldsmiths says its engravers can engrave the case or case back of a watch. If the watch has a see-through case back, ask where an engraving can go before you buy.
Can you return an engraved watch?
Usually not. Personalised items are normally excluded from returns, so check the watch fits and works before you have it engraved, and read the retailer's returns terms.
What is the best watch gift for a husband?
It depends on the occasion. For an anniversary, a dress watch he can wear with a suit, like the Longines Master Collection, engraved with your date. For a birthday or Christmas, the Tissot PRX suits almost everyone. For a big milestone, an Omega like the Seamaster Aqua Terra.
What is a good watch gift set for him?
Goldsmiths sells several, each with something extra in the box. The Fossil Machine set comes with a braided leather bracelet, and the Armani Exchange chronograph set with a steel chain bracelet. In luxury, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five 60th Anniversary Edition comes with an extra leather strap, according to Goldsmiths.
What is the best luxury watch gift for him?
An Omega, if your budget allows: the Seamaster Aqua Terra is smart, everyday and water resistant to 150 metres. For less, a Longines Master Collection. See our best luxury watches for men and best Omega watches.
What does it mean to give a man a watch?
There's no fixed rule, but a watch is usually read as a thoughtful, lasting gift: something he'll wear every day and keep for years, which is why watches are so often given for anniversaries, weddings and milestone birthdays. If you'd like the meaning to be clear, say it in the card or the engraving.
What should I write with a watch gift for him?
Something short about time together, the occasion or the years ahead, such as "For all our time to come" or "Happy 40th. Here's to the next 40". There are more ideas, for a husband, boyfriend or dad, in the section above on what to write.
Is giving a watch bad luck?
Only in some traditions. In Chinese culture, giving a clock is thought unlucky because the phrase sounds like one used for funerals, and some people extend that to watches. Some families get round it by having the receiver give a small coin in return, so the watch is "bought" rather than given. Most people in the UK see a watch as a thoughtful, lasting gift.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
