Endurance Pro. If you want a Breitling for sport, the Endurance Pro uses what Goldsmiths describes as COSC-certified SuperQuartz chronograph movements, so it's very accurate and needs no winding. It comes in 38mm and 44mm.

Breitling first launched the Superocean in 1957, according to Goldsmiths, as scuba diving was taking off. Today's 42mm Superocean is water resistant to 300 metres, with a scratch-proof ceramic-inlaid bezel.

£5,000 to £6,000: Chronomat B31 and Navitimer Automatic

The best Breitling overall: Chronomat B31. Goldsmiths' description says the Chronomat was introduced for Breitling's centennial in 1984. The Chronomat B31 40 uses Breitling's own COSC-certified calibre B31, with a 78-hour power reserve, and it's water resistant to 200 metres. It has a 5-year guarantee at Goldsmiths.

Navitimer Automatic. The Navitimer, short for "navigation timer", was first introduced in 1952, according to Goldsmiths. The 41mm Navitimer Automatic gives you the famous slide-rule bezel without the chronograph, for less. It's water resistant to 30 metres, so it's not one for swimming.

£6,000 and over: Top Time B01 and Navitimer B01

Top Time B01. Goldsmiths says the Top Time was first introduced in 1964. The Classic Cars editions are named after classic cars; this one, the Chevrolet Corvette, has a red dial and Breitling's B01 chronograph movement with a 70-hour power reserve.
