The best wedding watch for most grooms is the Tissot Le Locle: a Swiss automatic dress watch with a silver dial, slim enough to slide under a shirt cuff. Under £500, the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time is our pick, and for a luxury watch, the Longines Master Collection. For the bride, we'd choose the Longines PrimaLuna.

A wedding watch is usually a dress watch: slim, simple and elegant, so it looks right with a suit on the day and goes on to be worn every day after. Many are given as a gift between the couple, often engraved with the date. This guide covers watches for the groom, watches for the bride, matching his-and-hers pairs and what to engrave.

All the watches below are sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown, and they update when we re-check them.

How we chose

We looked for watches that suit a wedding suit or dress: slim cases, classic dials and leather straps or refined bracelets. We read each brand's own product page for the movement, thickness and crystal, and where the brand's page couldn't be read, we used Goldsmiths' description and say so. Every watch is sold new by a UK authorised retailer, from £149 to over £4,000.

Best for the groom: Tissot Le Locle Automatic

Tissot Le Locle
Best for the groomTissot Le Locle T0064071103300 · 39.3mm · Automatic · 30 m water resistant £665Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

The Le Locle is a classic Swiss dress watch for well under £1,000. Tissot's page lists a Swiss automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve, a sapphire crystal, a date and a see-through case back, so you can see the movement. Tissot gives the case as 39.3mm across and 9.75mm thick, so it slips easily under a shirt cuff. The silver dial has Roman numerals and, according to Goldsmiths' description, a texture inspired by the clock on the church tower in Le Locle, Tissot's home town.

Good to know: water resistance is 3 bar (30 metres), so it's fine for rain and washing your hands but should come off for swimming. Because the back is see-through, any engraving would need to go somewhere else on the case: ask Goldsmiths before you buy.

Best for the groom under £500: Seiko Presage Cocktail Time

Groom, under £500Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SRPB41J1 · 40.5mm · Automatic · 50 m water resistant £370Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

Seiko's Cocktail Time watches have dials inspired by cocktails, and this one is a deep blue. Seiko's page lists the 4R35 automatic movement (about 41 hours of power reserve), a box-shaped Hardlex crystal and a date, in a 40.5mm case that's 11.8mm thick.

Good to know: Hardlex is Seiko's hardened mineral glass, which scratches more easily than sapphire. The matching women's version is below, in our his-and-hers pairs.

Luxury for the groom: Longines Master Collection 39mm

Luxury for the groomLongines Master Collection Automatic L29494736 · 39mm · Automatic · 30 m water resistant £2,250Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

If you're spending more, the Master Collection is a beautiful classic. Longines' page lists a self-winding movement with up to 72 hours of power reserve, a sapphire crystal, a date and a silver "barleycorn" dial (a fine, textured pattern), in a 39mm steel case on a steel bracelet.

Good to know: Longines doesn't give the thickness on its page. Water resistance is 3 bar (30 metres).

The dream groom's watch: Omega De Ville Prestige Co-Axial

Omega De Ville Prestige Co-Axial

If the budget allows, this is a watch for life. Omega's page lists the Master Chronometer-certified 8800 movement with a 55-hour power reserve, a domed sapphire crystal, a sapphire case back and a 40mm case just 9.93mm thick, on a leather strap. Its smaller quartz sister makes a matching bride's watch (below).

Best for the bride: Longines PrimaLuna

Longines describes the PrimaLuna as inspired by the moon, with graceful curves. This 30mm steel version has a sunray silver dial, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, and a steel bracelet with a push-button folding clasp, according to Goldsmiths' description. It's a quartz watch, so there's nothing to wind. Water resistance is 3 bar (30 metres).

Matching his-and-hers wedding watches

Some couples choose watches from the same family, so they match without being identical.

Wedding watch engraving ideas

An engraving turns a watch into a keepsake (we have ideas for retirement watches too). Goldsmiths says its engravers can engrave the case or case back of a watch, from initials to family crests. A few ideas that work in a small space:

  • The wedding date, such as "14.06.2027"
  • Both sets of initials, such as "A & J"
  • Initials and date together, such as "A & J · 14.06.2027"
  • A short line that means something to you both, or the place you married

Before you engrave: check the watch fits and works first, because engraved watches usually can't be returned. And check the case back: watches with see-through backs, like the Tissot Le Locle and Omega De Ville, have less room for engraving, so ask Goldsmiths what's possible.

What to look for in a wedding watch

Slim enough for a cuff

A dress watch should slide under a shirt cuff. Look for a thickness of about 11mm or less: the Le Locle (9.75mm), Omega De Ville (9.93mm) and Tissot Ballade (8.25mm) are all comfortably slim.

A classic dial

White, silver and blue dials suit almost every suit and dress, and won't date. Roman numerals and slim baton markers look more formal than big sporty numbers.

Strap or bracelet

A leather strap is the most traditional choice with a suit. A steel bracelet is more practical for every day after the wedding. Many watches here come with quick-release straps, so you can have both.

Automatic or quartz?

An automatic is mechanical and has a story to tell, which suits a gift meant to last a lifetime. A quartz watch is more accurate and needs no attention. Our movement guide explains the difference.

Questions people ask

What is a good wedding watch for the groom?
A slim, classic dress watch that will still look right in 30 years. Our pick is the Tissot Le Locle: a Swiss automatic with a silver dial, 9.75mm thick so it slides under a shirt cuff, with an 80-hour power reserve. Under £500, the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time is excellent value. For luxury, the Longines Master Collection.
Should the groom wear a watch on the wedding day?
It's entirely up to you. Many grooms do, especially if the watch is a gift from the bride or a family piece, because it then appears in the photos. Choose a slim dress watch that fits under your shirt cuff. If you'd rather not think about time on the day, leave it on the dressing table and put it on afterwards.
What watch should I wear with a wedding suit?
A simple dress watch: a slim case (under about 11mm), a white, silver or blue dial, and a leather strap or a neat steel bracelet. Smartwatches and big sports watches tend to look out of place with a suit and catch on the cuff.
What should I engrave on a wedding watch?
Keep it short: the wedding date, both sets of initials, or a few words that mean something to you both. Goldsmiths says its engravers can engrave the case or case back of a watch, from initials to family crests. If the watch has a see-through back, ask where an engraving can go before you buy.
Can you return an engraved watch?
Usually not. Personalised items are normally excluded from returns, so check the watch fits and works before you have it engraved, and read the retailer's returns terms.
What is the best dress watch for a wedding?
A slim watch on a leather strap: the Tissot Le Locle for under £1,000, or the Omega De Ville Prestige, 9.93mm thick according to Omega. See our best dress watches.
Is a watch a good wedding gift for the groom?
Yes. It's one of the few gifts he'll wear every day, it can be engraved with your date, and a good mechanical or Swiss watch can last for decades. Set a budget first: there are excellent choices from about £150 to several thousand pounds.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
