The best retirement watch for most people is the Tissot Classic Dream in its gold-coloured version: a Swiss automatic with an ivory dial and an 80-hour power reserve, for under £500. If you'd like a watch that never needs a battery or setting, the Citizen "Tsuki-yomi" charges from light and sets itself by radio signal. For a luxury gift, the Omega De Ville Prestige. And for her, the Tissot PRC 100 Solar 34mm.

The gold watch is the classic retirement present, and for good reason. A watch is worn every day, lasts for decades and can be engraved with a message. It's also a gift that suits both a group collection from colleagues and a family gift. This guide covers every budget from under £200, gold-tone watches, and watches for men and women that are easy to live with.

All the watches below are sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown, and they update when we re-check them.

How we chose

We looked for watches that make a fitting thank-you and are easy to live with in retirement: classic looks, clear dials, and movements that need little attention. We read each brand's own product page for the movement, crystal and thickness, and where the brand's page couldn't be read, we used Goldsmiths' description and say so. We've included gold-tone watches, because "gold retirement watch" is what many people look for.

Best gold retirement watch: Tissot Classic Dream Yellow Gold

Tissot Classic Dream
Best gold retirement watchTissot Classic Dream T1584073626100 · 40mm · Automatic · 50 m water resistant £430Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

This is a modern take on the traditional gold retirement watch. Tissot's page lists a 316L stainless steel case with a PVD coating (Goldsmiths describes the colour as yellow gold), a Swiss Powermatic 80 automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve, a sapphire crystal and a date, in a 40mm case that's 10.23mm thick. It's on a brown leather strap with quick release, according to Tissot.

Good to know: it's gold-coloured steel, not solid gold. Water resistance is 5 bar (50 metres), so it's fine for rain and washing up but not for swimming.

Best no-fuss watch: Citizen "Tsuki-yomi" Moon Phase

Citizen Tsuki-Yomi Moon Phase

Citizen Tsuki-Yomi Moon Phase and Citizen Zenshin Super Titanium Discover Citizen 90 watches at Goldsmiths, £190 to £895. Discover all 90

If the person retiring never wants to change a battery or reset a watch again, this is the one. It's an Eco-Drive watch, charged by any light. Citizen's page lists radio control (it sets itself from time signals), a perpetual calendar, world time in 24 time zones, a moon phase and a sapphire crystal, in a Super Titanium case and bracelet. Goldsmiths' description says it works out the moon's phase each day, and gives its accuracy as within 15 seconds a month before any radio correction.

Good to know: at 43mm across, it's a large watch with a busy dial. The radio setting only works where the watch can pick up a time signal.

Best luxury retirement watch: Omega De Ville Prestige

Omega De Ville Prestige Co-Axial

For a once-in-a-lifetime gift, an Omega is hard to beat. Omega's own page gives the De Ville Prestige a thickness of 9.93mm, with the Master Chronometer calibre 8800 and a 55-hour power reserve, in a 40mm case with a dark blue dial on an alligator strap. It's a dress watch, water resistant to 30 metres, and Omega gives a 5-year guarantee, according to Goldsmiths. For every Omega, see our best Omega watches.

A smart Swiss watch that runs on light, so there's no battery to change. Tissot's page lists a sapphire crystal and a slim 9.14mm case, and it's water resistant to 100 metres, on a steel bracelet. There's an "End of Energy" indicator that warns when it needs more light, according to Goldsmiths' description.

Best gold-tone watch under £300: Rotary Greenwich

Rotary Greenwich
Rotary Greenwich GB02941/03 · 42mm · Automatic · 50 m water resistant £279Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

A traditional gold-tone watch for a modest budget, ideal for a collection among colleagues. Goldsmiths' description lists a 42mm gold PVD case and bracelet, Roman numerals around a skeletonised centre that shows the automatic movement at work, a deployment clasp and 50 metres of water resistance. Rotary gives a 2-year guarantee.

Good to know: PVD is a gold-coloured coating, not solid gold.

Best gold-tone automatic under £500: Seiko 5 Sports SNXS "Vintage Gold"

Seiko 5 Sports SNXS Vintage Gold Collection

A gold-coloured dial, gold-tone details on the bracelet (Goldsmiths lists it as steel and yellow gold PVD) and Seiko's 4R36 automatic movement with day and date. Seiko gives the case as 37.4mm across, 44.7mm lug to lug and 12.5mm thick, so it suits most wrists.

Good to know: the crystal is Hardlex, Seiko's hardened mineral glass, and an automatic stops if it isn't worn for about two days (Seiko quotes about 41 hours of power reserve).

Best easy-to-read watch: Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz

Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz
Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz H69401930 · 38mm · Quartz · 50 m water resistant £375Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

A field watch is designed to be read at a glance, and this one has clear numbers on a black dial. Hamilton gives the case as 38mm, just 8.3mm thick, with a sapphire crystal, so it's light and comfortable all day. As a quartz watch, it's accurate and needs a battery only every few years.

Good to know: water resistance is 50 metres (Hamilton's figure), so take it off for swimming.

Best solar everyday watch: Citizen Zenshin Super Titanium

Citizen Zenshin Super Titanium
Citizen Zenshin Super Titanium AW0130-85X · 39mm · Solar (Eco-Drive) · 100 m water resistant £399Price at Goldsmiths, 28 October 2026 Full specsSee it at Goldsmiths

Light, tough and powered by light. Citizen's page lists the J800 Eco-Drive movement, a sapphire crystal, day and date and 100 metres of water resistance in a 39mm Super Titanium case and bracelet. Citizen's description on Goldsmiths says Super Titanium is 40% lighter than stainless steel, and Goldsmiths lists a five-year guarantee. See our best solar watches guide for more.

Retirement watch engraving ideas

An engraving turns a retirement watch into a keepsake. Goldsmiths says its engravers can engrave the case or case back of a watch, from initials to family crests. Keep it short so it fits:

  • Name and years of service: "Jane Smith, 1994 to 2026"
  • A thank-you: "With thanks for 32 years, from all at Smith & Co"
  • A date and a wish: "Retired 31.10.2026. Enjoy every minute"

Check the watch fits and works before you have it engraved: engraved watches usually can't be returned. And check the case back: on watches with a see-through back, like the Tissot Le Locle, there's less room, so ask Goldsmiths what's possible.

What to look for in a retirement watch

Easy to read

A clear dial with strong contrast (dark hands on a light dial, or the other way round) and large numbers is easiest to read, especially without glasses. Busy dials with many small sub-dials are harder.

Easy to live with

A solar watch never needs a battery change, and a radio-controlled one sets itself. An automatic is lovely to own but stops if left off the wrist for a couple of days, and needs servicing every few years. Our movement guide explains each.

Easy to put on

A bracelet with a push-button folding clasp is easier to fasten than a strap and buckle, and a jeweller can size it properly. Light materials like titanium are more comfortable all day.

Gold or steel?

Gold-tone watches (usually steel with a PVD coating) give the traditional retirement look for a sensible price. Solid gold costs much more. Steel is the most versatile and goes with everything.

Questions people ask

What is a good retirement watch gift?
A classic watch that will last for years and is easy to live with. Our pick is the Tissot Classic Dream with a gold-coloured case: a Swiss automatic with an 80-hour power reserve, for under £500. If you want a watch that never needs any attention at all, the Citizen 'Tsuki-yomi' is light-powered and sets itself by radio signal.
Why do people give a watch for retirement?
A watch is a long-standing tradition for marking long service: a thank-you for the years given to work, and something to wear in the years that now belong to the person retiring. It's also practical, personal and can be engraved.
Does a gold retirement watch have to be real gold?
No. Most 'gold' watches at sensible prices are gold-coloured steel, made with a hard coating called PVD, which gives the look of gold for a fraction of the price. Solid gold watches cost thousands. The Longines DolceVita here uses 18-carat gold for some parts, according to Goldsmiths' description.
What should you engrave on a retirement watch?
The name, the years of service and a short thank-you work well, such as 'John Smith, 1992 to 2026, with thanks from all at Smith & Co'. Goldsmiths says it can engrave the case or case back of a watch. Check the watch fits and works first, because engraved watches usually can't be returned.
What is the best watch for an older man?
One with a clear, high-contrast dial, large numbers, a light case and no battery to worry about. The Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz is light and very easy to read, and a solar watch like the Citizen Zenshin never needs a battery change. A bracelet with a push-button clasp is easier to fasten than a buckle.
What is a good retirement watch for a woman?
The Tissot PRC 100 Solar 34mm, which never needs a battery, or for something special, an Omega Constellation. See our watch gifts for her.
Is an Omega a good retirement gift?
Yes, it's the classic. The Omega De Ville Prestige is a dress watch with a Master Chronometer movement and Omega's 5-year guarantee. See our best Omega watches.
How much should colleagues spend on a retirement watch?
There's no rule. A group collection often reaches £150 to £500, which buys a very good watch: the gold-tone Rotary Greenwich is under £300 and the Timex Marlin Moon Phase under £200, and the Tissot Classic Dream and Seiko 5 SNXS are under £500.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
