Which Omega Speedmaster to buy: Moonwatch, 38mm, '57 or Racing? (2026)

The Speedmaster isn't one watch but a family: the hand-wound Moonwatch, the automatic 38mm, the slim '57, the Racing, the Dark Side of the Moon and more. This is how they differ, which ones are automatic, which have a sapphire crystal, and which one to buy, using Omega's own measurements.

For most people, the best Omega Speedmaster is the Moonwatch Professional: 42mm, hand-wound, with Omega's Master Chronometer calibre 3861. If you'd rather not wind a watch, the automatic Speedmaster 38. For the slimmest Speedmaster, the '57.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised Omega retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown.

How we chose

We went through the Speedmasters Goldsmiths has in stock, more than 60 of them, and read Omega's own product pages for each family: the calibre, whether it winds itself, the crystal, the thickness and the lug-to-lug (the length from tip to tip, which decides how big a watch looks on your wrist). We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

Measurements, winding and crystals are Omega's own, from its product pages (Omega doesn't list a thickness for the Chronoscope we checked). Prices are Goldsmiths' for the version shown.

Two things stand out. Most of these Speedmasters are hand-wound, including the Moonwatch: you turn the crown every day or two. If you want one that winds itself, choose the 38, the Pilot or the Racing. And the 42mm Moonwatch wears smaller than its size suggests: its 47.5mm lug-to-lug is shorter than the '57's, which is only 40.5mm across.

The best Omega Speedmaster overall: the Moonwatch

This is the Speedmaster. Goldsmiths' description says the Moonwatch was part of all six Moon landings, and the case back is engraved "the first watch worn on the moon". Today's version has Omega's calibre 3861, hand-wound, certified as a Master Chronometer, with a 50-hour power reserve, according to Omega. It's water resistant to 50 metres, so fine for everyday wear but not for diving.

Hesalite or sapphire?

The Moonwatch is sold with two crystals. Hesalite is a type of acrylic: it scratches more easily than sapphire, but light scratches can be polished out, and it's the less expensive version. Sapphire is far more scratch-resistant. Omega gives the sapphire version as 13.18mm thick, against 13.54mm for the Hesalite. When we checked, Goldsmiths' sapphire Moonwatch cost £7,500, against £6,600 for the Hesalite. If you'll wear it every day and don't want to worry about scratches, choose sapphire.

On a strap, or with a white dial. The Hesalite Moonwatch also comes on a nylon strap, for less. The white-dial Moonwatch has a sapphire crystal and comes on a steel bracelet or a rubber strap.

The best automatic Speedmaster: Speedmaster 38

The Speedmaster for people who don't want to wind a watch. Omega lists the self-winding calibre 3330 with a 52-hour power reserve and 100 metres of water resistance, twice the Moonwatch's. The case is 38mm with a 44.9mm lug-to-lug, so it suits smaller wrists, though at 14.7mm it's thicker than the Moonwatch. It's also one of the least expensive Speedmasters at Goldsmiths.

It comes in several dials, on a strap or a steel bracelet.

The slimmest Speedmaster: the '57

Goldsmiths' description says the Speedmaster '57 collection was first introduced in 2013 and has returned slimmer, with a vintage look and a date window at six o'clock. Omega gives it 12.99mm thick, the slimmest Speedmaster we measured, with the hand-wound calibre 9906 and a 60-hour power reserve, ten hours more than the Moonwatch. It's 40.5mm across but has a long 49.64mm lug-to-lug, so it wears longer than its diameter suggests.

The '57 comes on a steel bracelet or a strap, in black, blue and green.

The best Speedmaster for smaller wrists: First OMEGA in Space

Goldsmiths' description says it's a tribute to the Speedmaster CK 2998 that astronaut Walter Schirra wore on the Sigma 7 mission in 1962, the first OMEGA worn in space. Omega gives it 39.7mm across (Goldsmiths lists it as 40mm and calls it the Anniversary Series), 13.38mm thick and 48mm lug-to-lug, with the same hand-wound calibre 3861 as the Moonwatch and a sapphire crystal shaped like Hesalite.

Questions people ask

Which Omega Speedmaster should I buy?
For most people, the Moonwatch Professional: it's the classic Speedmaster, 42mm, hand-wound, with Omega's Master Chronometer calibre 3861. If you'd rather not wind it, the automatic Speedmaster 38. If you want the slimmest, the Speedmaster '57.
Which Omega Speedmaster is automatic?
The Moonwatch Professional is hand-wound, and so are the '57, the First OMEGA in Space and the Chronoscope. The automatic (self-winding) Speedmasters at Goldsmiths include the Speedmaster 38 (calibre 3330), the Racing and the Pilot (both calibre 9900), and the Moonphase (calibre 9904), according to Omega.
Which Omega Speedmaster went to the Moon?
The Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional. Goldsmiths' description says the Moonwatch was part of all six Moon landings, and today's Moonwatch has 'the first watch worn on the moon' engraved on the case back.
Hesalite or sapphire Moonwatch?
Hesalite is a type of acrylic: it scratches more easily than sapphire, but light scratches can be polished out, and it's the less expensive version. Sapphire is far more scratch-resistant. Omega gives the Hesalite Moonwatch on a bracelet as 13.54mm thick and the sapphire version as 13.18mm. At Goldsmiths, the sapphire Moonwatch cost about £900 more than the Hesalite when we checked.
Which Omega Speedmaster has a sapphire crystal?
Almost all of them, except the Hesalite Moonwatch. The Moonwatch is sold with either: the sapphire version is the Moonwatch on a bracelet with the reference ending 01.002, and the white-dial Moonwatch also has sapphire. The 38mm, '57, Racing, Chronoscope and Dark Side of the Moon all have sapphire crystals, according to Omega.
Which Omega Speedmaster is the thinnest?
Of the Speedmasters we measured, the Speedmaster '57, at 12.99mm according to Omega. The sapphire Moonwatch is 13.18mm and the Speedmaster 38 is 14.7mm.
Is the Speedmaster 38 too small for a man?
Not necessarily. Omega gives it a 44.9mm lug-to-lug, so it suits wrists from about 15cm to 17cm best; on a bigger wrist, the 42mm Moonwatch (47.5mm lug-to-lug) will look more in proportion. Try our watch size calculator.
Do you have to wind the Moonwatch?
Yes. It's hand-wound: turn the crown until it stops, ideally at the same time each day. Omega gives it a 50-hour power reserve, so it runs for about two days after a full wind.
Is the Speedmaster waterproof?
The Moonwatch is water resistant to 50 metres, according to Omega, so it's fine for rain and hand-washing, but it isn't a dive watch. The Speedmaster 38 and the Pilot are rated to 100 metres. For swimming, see which Omega Seamaster to buy.
Speedmaster or Seamaster?
The Speedmaster is Omega's chronograph (stopwatch) family, best known as the Moonwatch; the Seamaster is its dive watch family. Choose the Speedmaster for history and the chronograph, the Seamaster for water resistance and everyday toughness.
