Breitling Navitimer sizes: 32, 36, 41, 43 or 46mm, which to buy? (2026)

The Navitimer comes in five sizes, with three kinds of movement: Breitling's own B01 chronograph, a simpler automatic and a quartz. This is how the sizes compare, which one suits your wrist, and whether the B01 is worth the extra, using Breitling's own figures.

For most people, the best Breitling Navitimer is the B01 Chronograph in 43mm: Breitling's own movement with a 70-hour power reserve. For smaller wrists, the same watch in 41mm. For much less, the Navitimer Automatic keeps the famous slide-rule bezel without the chronograph.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised Breitling retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown.

How we chose

We went through the Navitimers Goldsmiths has in stock, more than 70 of them, and read Breitling's own product pages for every size: the calibre, power reserve, thickness and water resistance. Breitling doesn't list lug-to-lug on the pages we read, so we haven't guessed one. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

Two things stand out. The B01 is the same watch in three sizes, with almost the same thickness, so choose by wrist, not by features. And the Automatic is much slimmer, under 12mm, because it has no chronograph.

Which Navitimer size for your wrist?

As a rough guide, by wrist measurement (all the way round):

  • Under about 16cm: the 32mm or 36mm.
  • About 16cm to 17.5cm: the 41mm, B01 or Automatic.
  • About 17.5cm to 19cm: the 43mm B01.
  • Over about 19cm: the 43mm or 46mm.

The Navitimer has a big dial and a thin bezel, so it can look larger than other watches of the same diameter. If you're between sizes, choose the smaller one. Our watch size calculator suggests a case size from your wrist.

The best Navitimer overall: B01 Chronograph 43

The classic Navitimer. According to Goldsmiths' description, the Navitimer, short for "navigation timer", was first introduced in 1952 for pilots to do their flight calculations in the air, and two years later became the official watch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), whose wings sit at 12 o'clock on the dial. The B01 Chronograph has the rotating slide-rule bezel and a stopwatch, powered by Breitling's own calibre 01 with a 70-hour power reserve, according to Breitling. Goldsmiths lists it with a 5-year guarantee.

Strap or bracelet? The steel bracelet costs about £200 more at Goldsmiths. The 43mm comes in black, blue, copper, mint green and silver.

The best Navitimer for smaller wrists: B01 Chronograph 41

The same B01 Chronograph, with the same calibre 01 and 70-hour power reserve, in a 41mm case. Breitling gives it 13.6mm thick, against 13.69mm for the 43mm, so the difference is all in the width. When we checked, Goldsmiths' prices for the two sizes were within £50 of each other.

The best value Navitimer: Navitimer Automatic 41

The slide-rule bezel and the Navitimer look, without the chronograph, for much less. Breitling lists the Breitling 17 automatic with a 38-hour power reserve, and at 11.65mm it's about 2mm slimmer than the B01, so it slides under a cuff more easily. Goldsmiths lists it with a 2-year guarantee, against 5 years for the B01.

The biggest Navitimer: B01 Chronograph 46

The B01 in 46mm, for large wrists only. Breitling gives it 13.95mm thick, barely more than the 41mm, so it's wide rather than tall.

Questions people ask

Which Breitling Navitimer size should I get?
For most men, the 43mm or 41mm B01 Chronograph. As a rough guide, the 41mm suits wrists up to about 17.5cm, the 43mm about 17.5cm to 19cm, and the 46mm only large wrists. The Navitimer has a wide dial and a thin bezel, so it can look bigger than its number. Our watch size calculator suggests a size from your wrist measurement.
Navitimer 41 vs 43: what's the difference?
Mostly the size: both B01 Chronographs use Breitling's own calibre 01 with a 70-hour power reserve, and Breitling gives them almost the same thickness, 13.6mm for the 41mm and 13.69mm for the 43mm. The 43mm has a larger dial that's easier to read; the 41mm suits smaller wrists. At Goldsmiths they were within £50 of each other when we checked.
Is the Navitimer 46mm too big?
For most wrists, yes, although Breitling gives it as only 13.95mm thick, so it's wide rather than tall. Try one on before you buy, or choose the 43mm.
What is the difference between the Navitimer B01 and the Navitimer Automatic?
The B01 is a chronograph (with a stopwatch), powered by Breitling's own calibre 01 with a 70-hour power reserve, and Goldsmiths lists it with a 5-year guarantee. The Navitimer Automatic has the same slide-rule bezel but no chronograph, uses the Breitling 17 with a 38-hour power reserve, is slimmer at 11.65mm, costs much less, and Goldsmiths lists it with a 2-year guarantee.
Is the Breitling Navitimer waterproof?
Not for swimming. Breitling rates the Navitimer B01 and Automatic at 3 bar (30 metres), so they're fine for rain and hand-washing only. The 32mm quartz is rated to 50 metres. For a Breitling to swim with, see our best Breitling watches.
What is the slide rule on the Navitimer for?
The Navitimer, short for 'navigation timer', was designed in 1952 to let pilots do their flight calculations in the air, according to Goldsmiths. The rotating slide-rule bezel is what makes those calculations possible.
What is the Navitimer's lug-to-lug?
Breitling doesn't list lug-to-lug on the product pages we read, so we haven't quoted one. Breitling gives the diameter and thickness, which we've used here.
