Which TAG Heuer Carrera to buy: chronograph, three-hand or Day-Date? (2026)

The Carrera is TAG Heuer's racing watch, and it comes as a chronograph in 39, 41, 42 and 44mm, a simple three-hand automatic, a Day-Date and a Twin-Time GMT. The calibres inside are very different, and so are the prices. This is which Carrera to buy at each budget.

For most people, the best TAG Heuer Carrera is the 39mm Carrera Chronograph: TAG Heuer's own TH20 movement under the "glassbox" sapphire crystal. For less, the three-hand Carrera with the Calibre 5. For an everyday watch that keeps running all weekend, the Carrera Day-Date with its 80-hour power reserve.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised TAG Heuer retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown.

How we chose

We went through the Carreras Goldsmiths has in stock, almost 80 of them, and read Goldsmiths' descriptions of each version for the calibre, power reserve and water resistance. TAG Heuer's own website doesn't let us read its specifications, so where Goldsmiths doesn't give a figure (such as thickness or lug-to-lug), we haven't quoted one. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

From Goldsmiths' descriptions of each version; all are water resistant to 100 metres, according to Goldsmiths. Prices are Goldsmiths' for the version shown.

The big dividing line is the movement. TAG Heuer's newer TH20 and TH31 calibres have an 80-hour power reserve, so the watch keeps running if you take it off on Friday night and pick it up on Monday. The older Calibre 5 and Calibre 16 have 38 and 42 hours.

The best Carrera overall: Chronograph 39mm

The modern Carrera chronograph in its most wearable size. Goldsmiths' description of the 39mm Carrera Chronograph names TAG Heuer's own Calibre TH20-00 automatic and the "signature glassbox" design: a sapphire crystal with no separate bezel around it. This blue version comes on a beads-of-rice steel bracelet.

Questions people ask

Which TAG Heuer Carrera should I buy?
For a chronograph, the 39mm Carrera Chronograph: TAG Heuer's own TH20 movement under the 'glassbox' sapphire crystal, in a size that suits most wrists. For less, the three-hand Carrera. For an everyday watch with a long power reserve, the Carrera Day-Date.
What is the TAG Heuer Carrera Glassbox?
It's the Carrera Chronograph's 'glassbox' sapphire crystal, with no separate bezel around it, which Goldsmiths' descriptions call TAG Heuer's signature glassbox design. You'll find it on the 39mm and 41mm Carrera Chronographs.
What is the difference between the Calibre 5, Calibre 16 and TH20?
They're the movements inside. According to Goldsmiths' descriptions, the Calibre 5 is the three-hand automatic, with a 38-hour power reserve; the Calibre 16 is the automatic chronograph in the 44mm Carrera, with 42 hours; and the TH20 is TAG Heuer's own automatic chronograph, with 80 hours, in the 39mm, 41mm and 42mm chronographs.
Is the TAG Heuer Carrera waterproof?
Goldsmiths lists the Carreras in this guide as water resistant to 100 metres, so they're fine for swimming. For a TAG Heuer dive watch, see which Aquaracer to buy.
What is the Carrera 39mm's lug-to-lug?
We couldn't confirm it from TAG Heuer's own site, so we haven't quoted a figure. At 39mm across, it's the Carrera chronograph we'd suggest for wrists of about 16cm to 18cm; our watch size calculator can help.
Is the TAG Heuer Carrera a good watch?
Yes. It's TAG Heuer's best-known collection: according to Goldsmiths, it was born on the racetracks in 1963 as a tribute to the Carrera Panamericana road race. Every Carrera in this guide is an automatic with 100 metres of water resistance, and Goldsmiths lists most with a 5-year guarantee.
TAG Heuer Carrera or Omega Speedmaster?
Both are famous racing-style chronographs. The 39mm Carrera Chronograph is automatic with an 80-hour power reserve and costs less; the Speedmaster Moonwatch is hand-wound, with the Moon-landing history. See which Omega Speedmaster to buy and Omega vs TAG Heuer.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
