Which Tissot PRX should you buy? 35mm vs 40mm, quartz vs Powermatic 80 (2026)

The PRX comes in seven sizes, two kinds of movement, steel, gold, titanium and even carbon. This is which one to buy: the size for your wrist, whether the automatic is worth the extra, and the versions worth stretching to, using Tissot's own measurements.

For most people, the best Tissot PRX is the 40mm Powermatic 80: the automatic version, which winds itself and runs for up to 80 hours off the wrist. For smaller wrists, the same watch in 35mm. For less money, the 40mm quartz has the same case, bracelet and sapphire crystal.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised Tissot retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown.

How we chose

We went through every PRX Goldsmiths has in stock, more than 50 of them, and read Tissot's own product pages for the measurements that matter: diameter, thickness and weight. The guide answers the two questions everyone asks (which size, and quartz or automatic), then covers the versions worth stretching to. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay. For the rest of Tissot's range, see our best Tissot watches.

35mm or 40mm?

This is the big decision, and it's about your wrist, not about whether the watch is "men's" or "women's". The PRX has a wide, flat case that flows straight into the bracelet, so there's no strap to soften the edges: it wears bigger than its number suggests.

  • Under about 17cm (6.7in) around the wrist: the 35mm looks right, and many men choose it for the 1970s proportions.
  • About 18cm (7in) and over: the 40mm fills the wrist better.

Not sure of your wrist size? Our watch size calculator shows how to measure it in a minute.

  • In between: both work. The 35mm is more vintage; the 40mm more modern.

The difference in the hand is real, too: Tissot gives 104g for the 35mm automatic and 138g for the 40mm.

Quartz or Powermatic 80?

The quartz PRX runs on a battery: it's the most accurate and the least expensive, and it's slightly thinner (10.4mm against 10.93mm in the 40mm size). The Powermatic 80 is automatic: a weight inside winds it as you move your wrist, and it keeps going for up to 80 hours off the wrist, so it's still running on Monday if you take it off on Friday evening. Goldsmiths' description of the 35mm also mentions its Nivachron™ balance spring.

You can see the difference on the dial, too: the Powermatic 80s we checked have Tissot's waffle (or "honeycomb") pattern, according to Goldsmiths' descriptions.

Our advice: if the budget stretches to the Powermatic 80, buy it. It's the version that feels like a proper Swiss watch, and an automatic never needs a battery. If it doesn't, the quartz has the same case, bracelet, crystal and water resistance, and loses nothing in looks.

The best PRX overall: Powermatic 80, 40mm

The PRX at its best: the automatic Powermatic 80 movement, a blue waffle-pattern dial, a sapphire crystal and an interchangeable steel bracelet, according to Goldsmiths' description. Tissot gives it a thickness of 10.93mm and a weight of 138g.

The best 35mm PRX: Powermatic 80 in ice blue

The 35mm automatic is the one we'd choose for most wrists under 17cm, and it's sold as unisex. Goldsmiths' description calls the colour ice blue and mentions the waffle dial, the Nivachron™ balance spring and a triple-blade folding clasp. Tissot gives 10.93mm thick and 104g.

The best value PRX: quartz, 40mm

The least expensive way to get the full-size PRX look. Goldsmiths' description says it's a Swiss quartz watch with a sapphire crystal, water resistant to 100 metres, on an interchangeable steel bracelet. It's the thinnest 40mm PRX, at 10.4mm according to Tissot.

The best PRX for slim wrists: 25mm

The smallest PRX, and a genuinely small watch: Tissot gives 25mm across, 9.05mm thick and just 65g. Goldsmiths' description says it has a quartz movement with an end-of-life (EOL) function, which tells you when the battery is running low, plus a sapphire crystal and 100 metres of water resistance.

Worth stretching to: titanium, Damascus and carbon

These three are automatics with an 80-hour power reserve, according to Tissot, in a 38mm or 40.5mm case made from something other than ordinary steel.

Titanium (38mm). The lightest PRX on a bracelet: Tissot gives 84g, against 138g for the 40mm steel automatic. 38mm sits between the two main sizes, so it suits a wide range of wrists.

Damascus steel (38mm) has a case with the swirling pattern of Damascus steel, on a calfskin strap, and Carbon (40.5mm) has a black carbon case on a rubber strap; Tissot gives 75g for each.

The PRX chronographs

There are two. The 41mm quartz chronograph uses Tissot's G10.212 quartz movement, according to Goldsmiths, and is 11.65mm thick according to Tissot.

The 42mm automatic chronograph is the top of the steel PRX range. Goldsmiths' description says it uses the Valjoux A05.H31 movement, with the classic three-counter layout. Tissot gives a 68-hour power reserve, a thickness of 14.54mm and a weight of 184g, so it's a much bigger watch on the wrist than the three-hand PRX.

The gold PRX

Most gold PRX watches are stainless steel with a yellow gold PVD coating: a durable gold-coloured finish, not solid gold. This 40mm quartz version is the least expensive.

Tissot PRX or something else?

If you like the PRX's integrated-bracelet look but want something different, the Citizen Tsuyosa is the automatic it's most often compared with, at a lower price. Questions people ask

Should I get the Tissot PRX in 35mm or 40mm?
It depends on your wrist more than on whether the watch is for a man or a woman. The PRX has a wide, flat case and an integrated bracelet, so it wears bigger than its number. As a rough guide: under about 17cm (6.7in) around, the 35mm looks right; from about 18cm (7in) the 40mm does. In between, choose by look: the 35mm is more 1970s, the 40mm more modern. Tissot's figures: the 35mm automatic weighs 104g and the 40mm 138g.
Tissot PRX quartz or Powermatic 80: which is better?
The Powermatic 80 is the better watch: it's automatic, so it winds itself as you move, and it keeps running for up to 80 hours off the wrist. It also gets Tissot's waffle-pattern dial. The quartz is cheaper, more accurate day to day, a little thinner (10.4mm against 10.93mm in the 40mm size, according to Tissot) and needs a new battery every few years. If the budget stretches, buy the Powermatic 80.
Is the Tissot PRX waterproof?
It's water resistant to 100 metres (10 bar), according to Tissot, which is fine for swimming. Keep the crown pushed in, and if you dive or swim a lot, a dive watch like the Tissot Seastar is the better tool.
Does the Tissot PRX have a sapphire crystal?
Yes. Every PRX we checked on Tissot's website has a sapphire crystal, which is far more scratch-resistant than mineral glass.
Is the Tissot PRX a dress watch?
It can be. The PRX is a sports watch with a steel bracelet, but it's slim (under 11mm in most sizes) and plain enough to wear with a suit. For a true dress watch on a leather strap, see our best dress watches.
What does PRX stand for?
According to Goldsmiths' description, PRX stands for Precision and Robustness. The original PRX was launched in 1978; today's watch is a modern version of it.
Is the gold Tissot PRX real gold?
Most gold PRX watches are steel with a gold-coloured PVD coating, like the 40mm gold quartz. A few are made with real gold: Goldsmiths sells a 35mm Powermatic 80 with an 18ct rose gold bezel and one with 9ct yellow gold, at several times the price.
Is the Tissot PRX worth it?
Yes, if you like the look. You get a Swiss watch with a sapphire crystal, 100 metres of water resistance and, in the Powermatic 80, an automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve, for well under £1,000. Its closest rivals are in our best men's watches under £1,000.
