Swiss watches have a reputation for being expensive, but some of the best-value watches in the world come from Switzerland. Brands like Tissot, Hamilton and Certina put Swiss quartz and automatic movements, sapphire crystals and proper water resistance into watches that cost well under £1,000.

How we chose

Why buy Swiss under £1,000?

80-hour automatics. Tissot's Powermatic 80 and Hamilton's H-10 run for 80 hours on a full wind, according to both brands. That's roughly double the 40-odd hours of most automatic watches at this price, so the watch survives a weekend off the wrist.

Sapphire as standard. Every Tissot and Hamilton in this guide has a sapphire crystal, according to the brands' pages.

A long-term watch. These are watches designed to be serviced and kept, from brands with UK service networks. Keep your guarantee card and receipt together.

Questions people ask

What does "Swiss Made" mean?
It's a protected label. To use it, a watch has to meet legal requirements about how much of the watch and its movement is made in Switzerland. Every watch in this guide is sold as Swiss-made by its brand.
What's the cheapest good Swiss watch?
In this guide, the Tissot PRX quartz at around £335 is the best-value Swiss watch, with a sapphire crystal and 100-metre water resistance. Tissot's Everytime range is cheaper still.
Are Swiss watches better than Japanese ones?
Not automatically. Seiko and Citizen make superb watches, often with more features for the money. Swiss watches under £1,000 tend to offer longer power reserves (Tissot's Powermatic 80 and Hamilton's H-10 run for 80 hours) and classic European design. Buy the one you prefer.
Tissot or Longines?
Tissot under £1,000; Longines from about £1,300, with finer finishing and a 5-year guarantee on its automatics, according to Goldsmiths. See our best Longines watches.
What is the best Swiss dress watch under £1,000?
The Tissot Le Locle, an automatic named after Tissot's home town. See our best dress watches.
Is Tissot a good Swiss brand?
Yes. Tissot has been making watches since 1853 (Goldsmiths' description) and is one of the best-value Swiss brands, with sapphire crystals and 80-hour automatics at prices under £1,000.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
