The best dress watch for most people is the Longines Heritage Flagship: a 38.5mm Swiss automatic on a leather strap, with a 5-year guarantee, for under £2,000. Under £100, the Accurist Classic. Under £500, a Seiko Presage. With more to spend, the Omega De Ville Prestige or a Cartier Tank.

What makes a good dress watch
- Slim. It should slide under a shirt cuff. Under about 10mm is ideal: we give the thickness where the brand or Goldsmiths publishes it.
- Simple. A clean dial with thin hands and few extras. A date is fine; a busy chronograph isn't.
- Not too big. 36mm to 40mm suits most men.
- On leather. A leather strap is the classic choice. A fine bracelet works too.
- Water resistance doesn't matter much. Most dress watches are water resistant to 30 or 50 metres: fine for rain, not for swimming.
The guide starts with the least expensive and works up.
Under £100: Accurist
Goldsmiths describes Accurist as a British watchmaker with over 75 years behind it. The Classic is a 37mm quartz watch on a brown leather strap: the right size and shape for a suit, for less than £100. Goldsmiths lists a 2-year guarantee, plus 3 more years when you register on Accurist's website.
Under £500: Seiko Presage
Seiko's Presage watches are its dress range, with dials inspired by Japanese cocktail culture. This 38.5mm Cocktail Time, Crushed Ice Whisky Mist, has a brown dial and is automatic, so it winds itself as you wear it, on a calfskin strap.

Tissot Le Locle is a Swiss automatic named after Tissot's home town, with an 80-hour power reserve. Raymond Weil's Toccata is a slim-looking quartz watch on leather.

Under £2,000: Longines and Frederique Constant
The best dress watch overall: Longines Heritage Flagship. Goldsmiths describes it as a tribute to Longines' innovative spirit: a 38.5mm automatic with Longines' L615 calibre, gilt hands and a date, on a brown leather strap. Longines gives a 5-year guarantee on its automatics, according to Goldsmiths.
Frederique Constant Classics Index. Goldsmiths says Frederique Constant was founded in 1988 by Peter Stas and Aletta Stas-Bax, and that each watch is hand-assembled. A 40mm automatic on a calfskin strap.
Under £5,000: NOMOS, Baume & Mercier and Omega
NOMOS Ludwig Enamel. A beautifully simple German watch with a glossy enamel-white dial and NOMOS's hand-wound calibre DUW 4001, according to Goldsmiths. You wind it by the crown every day or two, which many owners enjoy.
Omega De Ville Prestige. Omega's own page gives its thickness as 9.93mm, with the Master Chronometer calibre 8800 and a 55-hour power reserve. It's the luxury dress watch we'd buy for a wedding.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
