Which Longines HydroConquest to buy: 39mm, 41mm or 42mm, automatic, quartz or GMT (2026)

The HydroConquest is Longines' dive watch, and it comes in more versions than most people realise: three men's sizes, automatic or quartz, a GMT, and smaller models for women. This is which one to buy, with the differences Longines' own pages reveal.

For most people, the best HydroConquest is the newer 39mm automatic: it has a ceramic bezel, a silicon balance spring and a 72-hour power reserve, according to Longines. For bigger wrists, the 42mm is the same watch. For less money, the 41mm automatic has the same calibre and power reserve.

Every watch here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised Longines retailer. Prices are Goldsmiths' own on the date shown.

How we chose

We went through every HydroConquest Goldsmiths has in stock and read Longines' own product pages for the calibre, thickness and lug width of each version. That's how we found the differences that aren't obvious from the name, including that three of the watches Goldsmiths lists simply as "HydroConquest" are in fact the HydroConquest GMT, according to Longines. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay. For the rest of Longines' range, see our best Longines watches.

Which size: 39mm, 41mm or 42mm?

  • 39mm suits most wrists, and it's the size we'd choose. It's the newer generation, and its 20mm lug width means plenty of straps fit if you want a change from the bracelet.
  • 42mm is the same newer watch for bigger wrists, and Longines gives it the same 11.7mm thickness as the 39mm, so it isn't chunkier, just wider.
  • 41mm is the earlier design. It's the least expensive automatic HydroConquest, and Longines gives the same L888.5 calibre and 72-hour power reserve as the newer watches.

Questions people ask

Longines HydroConquest 39mm, 41mm or 42mm: which size?
The 39mm suits most wrists and is the one we'd choose: it's the newer generation, and Longines gives it a 20mm lug width and an 11.7mm case. The 42mm is the same newer watch for bigger wrists, at the same thickness. The 41mm is the earlier design, 11.9mm thick according to Longines, and the least expensive automatic.
What's the difference between the 41mm and the 39mm and 42mm HydroConquest?
The 39mm and 42mm are the newer generation. Longines describes them with a ceramic bezel and a monocrystalline silicon balance spring, and they're slightly thinner, at 11.7mm. The 41mm has the same L888.5 calibre and 72-hour power reserve, according to Longines, but costs much less at Goldsmiths.
HydroConquest quartz or automatic?
The automatic, if you can: it winds itself as you move and runs for up to 72 hours off the wrist, according to Longines, and Goldsmiths lists a five-year guarantee for the automatics against two years for the quartz. The quartz is a little thinner (11.3mm) and never needs winding, only a new battery every few years.
Is the Longines HydroConquest a real dive watch?
Yes. Every HydroConquest is water resistant to 300 metres, and Longines' pages describe a screw-in crown and a unidirectional rotating bezel, the bezel divers use to time a dive.
Is the Longines HydroConquest COSC certified?
Longines' pages for the models in this guide don't list a chronometer certificate. If certified accuracy matters most to you, Omega's Seamasters are Master Chronometers, tested by METAS: see which Omega Seamaster to buy.
Is the Longines HydroConquest a luxury watch?
It's an entry-level luxury watch: Swiss-made, from a brand that has made watches since 1832 (according to Goldsmiths), with automatic movements and a five-year guarantee on the automatics at Goldsmiths. It's one of our picks in the best first luxury watch.
Longines HydroConquest or TAG Heuer Aquaracer?
The HydroConquest is the better-value automatic: the Aquaracer Professional 300 costs more but adds an 80-hour power reserve. See our TAG Heuer Aquaracer guide to compare.
Longines HydroConquest or Omega Seamaster?
The Seamaster Diver 300M is the step up: Omega's Master Chronometer certification and finishing, at several times the price. See which Omega Seamaster to buy.
