Which Seiko Presage to buy: Cocktail Time, Style 60s or Classic Series? (2026)

The Presage is Seiko's dressy automatic range, and it runs from the famous Cocktail Time at under £400 to the Classic Series at about £1,000. The difference is bigger than the dials: crystal, movement, power reserve and water resistance all change. This is which Presage to buy, using Seiko's own specifications.

For most people, the best Seiko Presage is the Cocktail Time in blue: the dial everyone recognises, an automatic movement, under £400. If you want a sapphire crystal, a three-day power reserve and a watch you can swim in, the Classic Series at about £1,000 is a real step up.

How we chose

We went through the Presage watches Goldsmiths has in stock, more than 20 of them, and read Seiko's own UK product pages for each: the calibre, power reserve, crystal, thickness and water resistance. Where Seiko doesn't give a figure, such as most lug-to-lug lengths, we've left it out. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

The big divide is between the Cocktail Time family and the Classic Series. The Cocktail Time and Style 60s models we checked use Seiko's 4R movements with about 41 hours of power reserve (the 30.3mm models use the 2R05, with about 40), Seiko's Hardlex crystal and 50 metres of water resistance. The Classic Series steps up to the 6R movements with about 72 hours, a sapphire crystal and 100 metres. That's what the extra money buys.

Questions people ask

Which Seiko Presage should I buy?
For most people, the Cocktail Time in blue: the Presage everyone recognises, an automatic with a 41-hour power reserve, for under £400. If you want a sapphire crystal, a longer power reserve and water resistance for swimming, stretch to the Classic Series.
Which Seiko Presage has a sapphire crystal?
The Classic Series: Seiko lists a dual-curved sapphire crystal on the Shiro-iro and its open heart version. The Cocktail Time and Style 60s models we checked use Seiko's box-shaped Hardlex, a hardened mineral glass that scratches more easily than sapphire.
Is the Seiko Presage a good watch?
Yes, for the money. The Cocktail Time gives you an automatic movement and one of the best dials at its price. Know the limits: Seiko rates it at 5 bar (50 metres), so it isn't for swimming, its power reserve is about 41 hours, and the Hardlex crystal is less scratch-resistant than sapphire.
Is the Seiko Presage waterproof?
The Cocktail Time and Style 60s are rated to 5 bar (50 metres) by Seiko: fine for rain and hand-washing, not for swimming. The Classic Series is rated to 10 bar (100 metres).
What size is the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time?
Seiko gives the classic Cocktail Time as 40.5mm across and 11.8mm thick. There's also a 33.8mm version, a 34mm and a 30.3mm, and the Crushed Ice is 38.5mm. Not sure which suits you? Try our watch size calculator.
Why is it called the Cocktail Time?
According to Goldsmiths' description, the collection is inspired by the Japanese tradition of ending the working day with a cocktail, and each watch is named after a drink created by Hisashi Kishi, head bartender and owner of the Star Bar in Tokyo's Ginza district.
Seiko Presage or Tissot PRX?
Both are popular automatics under £500. The Presage is the dressier watch, with its textured dials and leather-strap options; the Tissot PRX is a sportier steel watch with a sapphire crystal, an 80-hour power reserve and 100 metres of water resistance, according to Tissot. See which Tissot PRX to buy.
