Which Hamilton Khaki Field to buy: quartz, mechanical, automatic or Murph (2026)

The Khaki Field is Hamilton's military-inspired field watch, and one of the least expensive ways into a Swiss mechanical watch. Goldsmiths sells it with three kinds of movement, in sizes from 33mm to 42mm, from £375. This is which one to buy.

The best Hamilton Khaki Field for most people is the 38mm Khaki Field Auto: Hamilton's H-10 automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve, 100 metres of water resistance and a sapphire crystal, for about £640. For a thinner, hand-wound watch, the Khaki Field Mechanical; for the best value, the Khaki Field Quartz from £375.

How we chose

We went through every Khaki Field Goldsmiths sells and compared the movements, sizes and water resistance from Goldsmiths' own product pages. Where a detail isn't listed for a watch, we've left it out rather than assume it's the same as a similar model. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

Quartz, mechanical or automatic?

This is the main choice, and it changes the price, the thickness and how you live with the watch.

Watch Size Movement Power reserve Water resistance Price
Khaki Field Quartz 38mm, 8.3mm thick Quartz, F06.105 Battery 50m £375
Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm, 9.5mm thick Hand-wound, H-50 80 hours 50m £545
Khaki Field Auto 38mm, 11mm thick Automatic, H-10 80 hours 100m £640
Khaki Field Murph 38mm Automatic, H-10 80 hours 100m £865
Khaki Field Expedition 41mm, 11.5mm thick Automatic, H-10 80 hours 100m £1,035
  • Quartz runs on a battery: the least expensive, the thinnest, and it never needs winding.
  • Mechanical is wound by hand every few days: a traditional watch you interact with.
  • Automatic winds itself as you wear it: the easiest to live with, and in this guide the most water resistant.

Questions people ask

Should I get the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical or the Auto?
The Mechanical winds by hand: you turn the crown every few days, and it's thinner (9.5mm) and less expensive. The Auto winds itself as you wear it, and the one in this guide is water resistant to 100 metres rather than 50. Both have an 80-hour power reserve, according to Goldsmiths. If you'll wear it every day, the Auto is easier; if you enjoy winding a watch, the Mechanical.
Which size Khaki Field should I get?
38mm is the classic size and suits most wrists; Goldsmiths also sells 40mm (the King), 41mm (the Expedition) and 42mm versions for a larger wrist, and a 33mm Quartz. Check the size against your wrist with our watch size calculator.
What is the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph?
Goldsmiths describes the Murph as "one of science fiction's most famous watches, known by fans as 'The Murph'". The 38mm Murph Auto has a black dial with vintage-style beige Super-LumiNova hands and the H-10 automatic movement with an 80-hour power reserve; there's also a 42mm.
Is the Hamilton Khaki Field waterproof?
It depends on the version. Of the watches in this guide, the Auto, Murph and Expedition are water resistant to 100 metres, so swimming is fine; the Mechanical and Quartz are rated to 50 metres, fine for rain and washing but not swimming, according to Goldsmiths. Other versions vary (a few Autos are 50 metres, some Mechanicals 100), so check the water resistance on each watch's page.
Is the Hamilton Khaki Field worth it?
For a Swiss field watch, yes: the Khaki Field Auto costs about £640 at Goldsmiths when we checked, with an 80-hour power reserve, a sapphire crystal and 100 metres of water resistance. See our best field watches to compare it with other brands.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer.
