The Panerai to buy for most people is the Luminor Marina 44mm: the classic Panerai, with its crown-protecting bridge, a small seconds dial and 300 metres of water resistance. For a smaller wrist, the 40mm Luminor Quaranta; for the best value, the hand-wound Luminor Logo; for diving, the Submersible.

How we chose

We went through every Panerai Goldsmiths sells and compared the sizes, movements and water resistance from Goldsmiths' own product pages. Several Panerai listings contradict themselves (a strap or a movement that differs between the description and the specification, or the same reference listed twice with different details), so we only chose watches whose details agree. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

The Panerai families, in short

Goldsmiths' descriptions say Panerai was founded in 1860 and that its watches were designed "to meet the military requirements of the Italian Royal Navy", known for their legibility and luminosity. The Luminor's signature, in Goldsmiths' words, is its "crown-protecting bridge and cushion shaped case".

Panerai's slimmer case, which Goldsmiths calls "a new icon": 38mm in polished steel, with an ivory sun-brushed dial, the P.900 automatic movement with a 72-hour power reserve, and a red alligator strap. Questions people ask

Which Panerai should I buy first?
For the classic Panerai look, the Luminor Marina in 44mm: automatic, with a small seconds dial at 9 o'clock and 300 metres of water resistance. If 44mm is too big, the Luminor Quaranta is the same idea in 40mm. The least expensive Luminor is the hand-wound Luminor Logo.
What size Panerai should I get?
Panerai watches are large: 44mm is the classic Luminor size; 40mm (Quaranta) and 38mm (Luminor Due) suit most wrists better. Check the size against your wrist with our watch size calculator.
What is the difference between the Panerai Luminor and Radiomir?
The Luminor has the crown-protecting bridge, the lever over the crown that Panerai is known for; the Radiomir doesn't have that bridge, and is the plainer, dressier of the two. Goldsmiths sells the Radiomir Quaranta in 40mm.
Is the Panerai Luminor Marina waterproof?
The Luminor Marina in this guide is water resistant to 300 metres, according to Goldsmiths, so swimming and diving are fine. Water resistance varies across Panerai: the Luminor Due and Radiomir Quaranta are rated to 30 metres, so check each watch's page.
How much is a Panerai watch in the UK?
At Goldsmiths, from about £4,300 for a hand-wound Radiomir to about £7,900 for the Luminor Marina and £8,500 for the Submersible, with titanium, Carbotech and gold models above that, when we checked. Each watch in this guide shows Goldsmiths' price, checked every morning.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
