The best eternity ring for most people is a half eternity ring of natural diamonds in the same metal as her engagement ring. Our pick is Goldsmiths' 18ct yellow gold 0.75ct claw-set ring, in G colour and SI clarity; under £1,000, the 9ct 0.50ct claw-set ring gives half a carat. For diamonds all the way round, the platinum 0.50ct full eternity ring is the one.

Every ring here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer, at Goldsmiths' own price on the date shown, and every one comes in at least seven sizes. All diamonds are natural: we don't list lab-grown.

How we chose

Goldsmiths has more than 500 eternity rings. We kept the ones that come in plenty of sizes, then compared the details Goldsmiths gives for each: the metal, the total diamond weight, the colour and clarity grades, and the width. The explanations of the grades come from GIA, which created the scales most jewellers use. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

What an eternity ring means

Goldsmiths describes an eternity ring as a sign of commitment, love and adoration: a promise to cherish the relationship. It's worn between the wedding ring and the engagement ring, and traditionally marks the birth of a child or a significant anniversary, according to Goldsmiths. It doesn't have to: Goldsmiths' own jewellery guide says it makes a stacking ring for any occasion.

Full or half eternity?

  • Full eternity: diamonds all the way round the band. The most sparkle, but Goldsmiths says resizing a standard eternity ring is likely to affect the design, so get the size right first.
  • Half eternity: diamonds across the front, plain metal at the back. Most of Goldsmiths' eternity rings are half eternity: 326 of the 518 we looked at, against 125 full.
Ring Style Total weight Colour Clarity Metal Price
Goldsmiths claw set Half 0.75ct G SI 18ct yellow gold £2,500
Goldsmiths channel set Full 0.50ct I I1 Platinum £1,650
Goldsmiths claw set Half 0.50ct I I1 9ct yellow gold £850

Grades are Goldsmiths' own. On GIA's scale, G is near-colourless, SI means inclusions a skilled grader notices under 10x magnification, and I1 means inclusions that are obvious under 10x and may affect brilliance.

Matching it to her other rings

Goldsmiths' advice on how the wedding and eternity bands sit with the engagement ring:

  • Match the width, ideally, so neither ring dominates.
  • Match the metal of the engagement ring, as Goldsmiths says most brides do. For wedding bands, Goldsmiths notes platinum with yellow gold is also a popular contrast.

See our guide to 9ct vs 18ct gold, and white gold vs platinum if you're not sure which metal she has.

Getting the size right

Ring sizes in the UK are letters. Goldsmiths lists the sizes in stock for every ring, and our pages show them, updated daily. If it's a surprise, borrow a ring she wears on that finger and ask a jeweller to size it. Goldsmiths' extended Christmas returns, which we read in October 2026, cover items bought between 1 October 2026 and 3 January 2027, if unused and in their original packaging, with proof of purchase. Always check Goldsmiths' own page before you order.

Questions people ask

What does an eternity ring mean?
Goldsmiths describes it as a sign of commitment, love and adoration: a promise to cherish the relationship. It traditionally marks the birth of a child or a significant anniversary.
When should you give an eternity ring?
Traditionally, for the birth of a child or a significant anniversary, according to Goldsmiths. There's no fixed rule: Goldsmiths also suggests it as a stacking ring for any occasion.
What is the difference between a full and a half eternity ring?
A full eternity ring has diamonds all the way round the band; a half eternity ring has them across the front, with plain metal at the back. Goldsmiths sells both.
Which finger does an eternity ring go on?
On the same finger as the wedding and engagement rings, between the two, according to Goldsmiths. Goldsmiths notes some people wear it on the right hand instead, which allows a bigger design.
Can an eternity ring be resized?
Goldsmiths says resizing a standard eternity ring isn't impossible, but is likely to affect the design. So get the size right first: Goldsmiths lists the sizes in stock for each ring, and our pages show them, updated daily.
Should an eternity ring match the engagement ring?
Goldsmiths' advice: ideally the bands should be the same width, so neither dominates, and most brides match the metal of their engagement ring.
How much should I spend on an eternity ring?
Whatever suits you: at Goldsmiths, natural diamond eternity rings start well under £1,000, like the 9ct 0.50ct claw set ring, and a full carat starts with the platinum seven-stone.
