For most people, the best engagement ring is a classic diamond solitaire, and our pick is Mappin & Webb's Ena Harkness: half a carat in platinum, G colour and SI1 clarity, with a GIA certificate, according to Goldsmiths. Under £2,000, the Mappin & Webb Amelia; under £1,000, a 9ct white gold cluster.

Every ring here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer, at Goldsmiths' own price on the date shown. All are natural diamonds: we don't list lab-grown.

How we chose

We went through the engagement rings Goldsmiths has in stock, more than 300 of them, and compared Goldsmiths' details for each: the metal, the diamond's total weight, its colour and clarity grades, and whether it's GIA certified. Where a ring isn't certified, we say so. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

Grades and certificates are Goldsmiths' own.

  • The setting. Goldsmiths groups its rings as solitaire (one diamond), halo (a ring of small diamonds around the centre), cluster (several stones together) and three stone.
  • The grades. On GIA's scales, colour runs from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow, brown or grey), and clarity from Flawless to I3. G and H are near-colourless; SI1 means inclusions a skilled grader notices under 10x magnification, while I1 to I3 means inclusions that are obvious under 10x and may affect brilliance, according to GIA.
  • Carat is weight: GIA defines a carat as 0.2 grams. "Total" (cttw) means all the diamonds in the ring added together, not the centre stone alone.
  • The metal. Goldsmiths says platinum doesn't need re-plating like white gold, and 18ct gold is 75% pure gold. See gold and platinum explained.

The best engagement ring overall: Mappin & Webb Ena Harkness

Questions people ask

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
There's no rule: spend what's comfortable. Goldsmiths' engagement rings start at about £300, and this guide has a pick under £1,000, £2,000 and £5,000. What changes most with price is the size and grade of the diamond, and the metal.
What is the best engagement ring under £1,000?
The 9ct white gold cushion cluster ring: half a carat of diamonds in total, set together as a cushion-shaped cluster. Goldsmiths lists its grades as I colour and I2 clarity, and it isn't certified.
What is the best engagement ring under £2,000?
Mappin & Webb's Amelia in platinum: 0.50 carats in total, G colour and SI1 clarity, and GIA certified, according to Goldsmiths.
What does GIA certified mean?
GIA created the colour and clarity scales most jewellers use. Goldsmiths lists these diamonds as GIA certified, meaning their grades come from GIA rather than only from the seller. 98 of the rings we list are GIA certified, from about £1,275.
Platinum or white gold for an engagement ring?
Goldsmiths says platinum has a greyer finish than white gold, is denser and heavier, is nickel-free and hypoallergenic, and doesn't need re-plating every few years like white gold. White gold is brighter and comes at more price points. See gold and platinum explained.
How do I find the right ring size?
UK ring sizes are letters: Goldsmiths lists sizes from F up to Z on some rings. Each ring's page lists the sizes Goldsmiths has in stock, checked every morning. If you're buying as a surprise, borrow a ring she already wears on that finger and ask a jeweller to size it.

How we write these guides: every piece of jewellery is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
