The best pearl jewellery for most people is a pair of Akoya pearl studs in gold: Goldsmiths' 9ct white gold 6 to 6.5mm Akoya studs are our pick. Under £100, its 9ct gold freshwater studs give a bigger pearl for less, and for a necklace, the 18 inch freshwater strand is the classic.

How we chose

We went through the pearl jewellery Goldsmiths has in stock and compared the details it gives for each: the pearl type, the size in millimetres, the metal, and the pearl quality where it's listed. We left out pieces set with mother of pearl rather than pearls. The explanations of pearl types come from GIA, the Gemological Institute of America. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

Akoya, freshwater, South Sea and Tahitian pearls

GIA describes four main types of cultured pearl:

Type Grown in Typical size Typical colour
Akoya Saltwater, mainly Japan and China Under 9mm White or cream, often a pink overtone
Freshwater Freshwater lakes and ponds, mostly in China Wide range Wide range, mainly pastels
South Sea Saltwater, mainly Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines 8 to 18mm White or golden
Tahitian Saltwater, French Polynesia 8 to 14mm Dark grey, most often greenish grey
  • Akoya pearls are the small white pearls most people picture when they think of pearls: usually round, with high lustre, according to GIA.
  • Freshwater pearls are the most commonly produced pearls, often with many grown in one mollusc, and come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and colours at lower prices, according to GIA.
  • South Sea and Tahitian pearls are larger, according to GIA. None of the Goldsmiths pearl jewellery we list is South Sea or Tahitian.

GIA judges pearls on seven value factors: size, shape, colour, lustre, surface, nacre thickness and matching.

Looking after pearls

GIA's advice: keep pearls away from perfume, make-up and hairspray, whose chemicals can dull the pearl's surface, and from ammonia and chlorine, so take them off for cleaning and never wear them in a pool.

Buying pearls as a gift

Pearl studs and a strand are among the safest jewellery gifts: there's no size to guess. Goldsmiths' extended Christmas returns, which we read in October 2026, cover items bought between 1 October 2026 and 3 January 2027, if unused and in their original packaging, with proof of purchase. Always check Goldsmiths' own page before you order.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Akoya and freshwater pearls?
According to GIA, Akoya pearls are saltwater pearls, usually round and white or cream with high lustre, and typically under 9mm. Freshwater pearls are cultured in freshwater lakes and ponds, mostly in China, in a wide range of colours, shapes and sizes. They're the most commonly produced pearls, available at lower prices.
Are Akoya pearls better than freshwater pearls?
Not better, different. Akoya pearls are what most people picture as the classic round white pearl, according to GIA. Freshwater pearls give you a bigger pearl for the money: compare Goldsmiths' 7mm freshwater studs with its 6mm Akoya studs.
What are South Sea and Tahitian pearls?
GIA describes South Sea pearls as the largest cultured pearls, usually white or golden, typically 8 to 18mm, and Tahitian pearls, often called black pearls, as dark grey to greenish grey, typically 8 to 14mm. None of the Goldsmiths pearl jewellery we list is South Sea or Tahitian.
How do you look after pearls?
GIA's advice: keep pearls away from perfume, make-up and hairspray, whose chemicals can damage the pearl's surface, and from ammonia and chlorine, so don't wear them while cleaning or in a pool.
Is pearl a birthstone?
Yes: Goldsmiths describes its freshwater pearl necklace as the ideal gift to mark a June birthday.
How much do pearl earrings cost?
At Goldsmiths, real pearl studs in 9ct gold start under £100, Akoya studs in 9ct gold around £150, and Mappin & Webb's Akoya studs in 18ct gold several hundred pounds. The prices here are Goldsmiths' own, checked every day.

How we write these guides: every piece of jewellery is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
