Gold or silver?

• 9ct gold is 37.5% gold. Goldsmiths says lower carats like 9ct are more affordable and more hard-wearing, ideal for everyday wear.
• Sterling silver is 92.5% silver, hallmarked 925, and costs far less: the chains and bracelets here start under £200.
• Hollow or solid? A hollow gold chain's links are hollow inside, so it uses less gold than a solid one of the same size. Goldsmiths says which each one is.

The best men's gold chains

Goldsmiths 9ct curb chain, 18 inches. A classic hollow curb chain in 9ct yellow gold, 5mm wide and 6.2 grams, according to Goldsmiths.

For a longer or heavier chain: the 20 inch curb, the solid 5mm curb (solid gold links, 20 inches), and a Figaro chain, 20 inches and about 5mm wide.

For less: AMOR's 9ct gold anchor chain, about 1mm wide and 45cm long: a fine chain that suits a pendant.

The best men's silver chains

Goldsmiths oxidised curb, 7.9mm. A bold curb chain in sterling silver with an oxidised (darkened) finish, 7.9mm wide and 20 inches (50cm), according to Goldsmiths.

Luxury: Fred's Force 10, an 18ct white gold buckle on a storm grey cable, and Messika's Move Titanium cord bracelet, set with diamonds in G colour and VS clarity, which Messika describes as light and comfortable to wear. Fred also sells Force 10 buckles on their own, with the cable sold separately: this one comes with both.

Buying men's jewellery as a gift
