Birthstone jewellery UK (2026): every month's birthstone, and the best necklace and earrings for each

A birthstone turns a necklace or a pair of earrings into a gift that's about her. This is every month's birthstone, from January's garnet to December's tanzanite, and the piece we'd buy for each, in real 9ct gold, plus what to do when a month has two stones.

  9. Questions people ask

The best birthstone jewellery for most people is a 9ct gold birthstone pendant: Goldsmiths makes one in every month's stone, on an 18 inch chain, and matching stud earrings for each. Below is every month's birthstone, the pendant and studs for it, and a step up where there's one worth having.

Every piece here is sold new by Goldsmiths, a UK authorised retailer, at Goldsmiths' own price on the date shown. All diamonds are natural: we don't list lab-grown.

How we chose

We used Goldsmiths' own list of birthstones by month, then went through the birthstone jewellery Goldsmiths has in stock and picked a necklace and earrings for each month, favouring real gold and pieces that come with their chain. Where sources disagree on a month's stone, we say so. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, which never changes the price you pay.

Birthstones by month

According to Goldsmiths' birthstone guide:

Month Birthstone
January Garnet
February Amethyst
March Aquamarine
April Diamond
May Emerald
June Pearl or pink amethyst
July Ruby
August Peridot
September Sapphire
October Opal or tourmaline
November Citrine or topaz
December Tanzanite

Birthstone lists differ between sources: GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, also names alexandrite and moonstone for June, spinel and sardonyx for August, bloodstone for March, and turquoise and zircon for December. If a month has more than one, choose the one she'll love.

How we write these guides: every piece of jewellery is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
