How we chose

We looked for watches under £200 from established brands with a manufacturer's guarantee, at least 30 metres of water resistance and a design that won't look dated in a year's time. We picked one watch for each kind of wearer, and we point out where you're making a compromise.

Best overall: Casio G-Shock GA-2100

Casio G-SHOCK Carbon Core Octagon Series

The GA-2100 is a G-Shock for people who don't usually like G-Shocks. Its eight-sided carbon-resin case is slimmer and neater than the classic chunky shape, and it combines hands with a small digital display. Goldsmiths lists it as water resistant to 200 metres, and like every G-Shock it's built to take knocks.

Good to know: it's big on paper at 45.4mm, but resin is very light, so it wears smaller than you'd expect.

What you give up under £200 (and what you don't)

You don't give up accuracy. A quartz watch at £50 keeps time as well as most quartz watches at £500. Only automatic watches, like the Accurist Origin, are less accurate, and that's true at any price.

You may give up scratch resistance. Most watches here use acrylic or mineral glass rather than sapphire. If you're hard on watches, a resin G-Shock is the safest choice, since there's very little to scratch.

You give up some finishing. Bracelets and clasps feel lighter, and cases are less finely polished. If that matters to you, the step up to our under £500 picks is worth it.

Questions people ask

Can you get a good watch for under £200?
Yes. Under £200 you can buy a watch that keeps excellent time, survives everyday knocks and looks good. Casio and Timex in particular make very good watches at this price. What you usually give up is sapphire glass, a premium-feeling bracelet and the finishing you'd see on a £500 watch.
What's the best brand for cheap watches?
For toughness and value, Casio (especially G-Shock). For classic and retro styles, Timex. British brands Accurist, Rotary and Sekonda make good-looking dress and everyday watches at low prices.
Are there automatic watches under £200?
A few. The Accurist Origin in this guide is an automatic for £199, according to Goldsmiths. Most watches at this price are quartz, which is more accurate and needs less care.
What is the best field watch under £200?
The Timex Expedition Capstone: a 39mm quartz field watch, water resistant to 50 metres. See our best field watches.
What is the best dress watch under £100?
The Accurist Classic: 37mm on a brown leather strap. See our best dress watches for every budget.
Is acrylic or mineral glass a problem?
Not really, but it's worth knowing about. Acrylic, used on several retro Timex watches, scratches easily, but light scratches can usually be polished out. Mineral glass is harder to scratch but can't be polished. Sapphire, which is rare under £200, is the most scratch-resistant.

How we write these guides: every watch is one you can buy new from a UK authorised retailer. Prices and specifications come from the retailer's own product page, and anything extra comes from the brand's website. We check prices and stock every morning, but they can change, so the retailer's page always has the final word. No brand or retailer pays to appear.
